Knit & Crochet in the West of Ireland

5 nights departing 19th April 2020

On this superb 6-day knitting & crochet holiday you’ll enjoy workshops led by either Carol Meldrum and discover the stunning scenery, spirit and traditional crafts of the west coast of Ireland. Included excursions give you a chance to explore the charming city of Galway and visit the Leenane Sheep and Wool Centre amidst the rugged Connemara landscape.

Knitting has been a part of Irish life since the 1600’s when knitting schools were established across the country. During the 18th century knitting became a source of income for many households thanks to an abundance of wool. Aran sweaters with their distinctive design are a symbol of Ireland. A full day excursion to the smallest of the Aran islands is a chance to learn about Aran knitting – the Innis Oirr way.

Caught up in Cables with Carol Meldrum

Carol’s West Coast of Ireland project is inspired by traditional cable knit designs. Over the course of the trip we will look at the construction of cable designs and using either knit or crochet techniques, will create a cable hat or cowl design.

The project is worked in the round from the bottom up, beginning with the rib. For the main body of the design you can pick from a variety of cable patterns or even mix and match if you’re feeling adventurous!

This workshop is suitable for those who understand basic knit / crochet techniques or want to improve on existing skills.
